Entrepreneurial spirit

I've been a volunteer coach at the Girls Middle School for three years. My sister-in-law HG turned me onto the Entrepreneurial Program there and I've really enjoyed working with the 7th graders to build their businesses. It's actually quite remarkable to see 12-to-14 year-old girls put together a coherent business plan (including financials), pitch their companies to real VCs in front of 400 people, and then actually run the business for a semester. This year's group (Natural Eaze) closed their books today. After running the business for 4 months, they had $1,800 in sales and $1,065 in profit. After paying back startup loans (with interest) and donating 20% of the profits to charity, each girl walked away with $170 in cash - quite at score at that age.

I wish I had more time for volunteer activities. In addition to the Girls Middle School, I also tried to get involved with the Computer History Museum. Computers are near and dear to my heart and being a docent at the museum would have been a lot of fun. Getting back involved with NARF, a local animal rescue group, would also be interesting to me. But it would all take time that I don't have right now. Oh well. I guess it's all about priorities.
