Random event or message from heaven?

This morning, I was up in San Francisco for a conference.  Right after parking my car and walking out of the parking garage (at about 7:45am), I noticed a person walking towards me carrying a sign.  I couldn't quite make out what it said but one of the words appeared to be "Jesus".  As I looked up a bit, I noticed that the person was wearing a bright yellow shirt that said "Jesus Christ Loves You".  He walked by very matter-of-fact and didn't say anything to me.

Here's the question that's been going through my head since then.  Was that a random event without any meaning or was it a message from heaven?  I'm inclined towards the latter but I could certainly see people arguing for the former.  I'm of the opinion more and more these days that God is sending us messages all the time but we just don't pay attention or attach significance to them.  We convince ourselves that God wouldn't take a personal interest in us. But I just don't think that's the case.

Some years ago I heard Patricia Holland speak at a women's conference at BYU. She reported that someone had said to her, "A coincidence is a miracle in which God chooses to remain anonymous." Or close to that. BG

I received this comment via email:

What if the sign you had seen had said "God is Dead" "Jesus Does Not Save". Would this then be a message from Satan? Or would it have been a challenge to a Christian from heaven to scream in his heart, no Lord this is not true, in you I put my trust.

More then ever today people are bombarded by information. Information on the web, books, and from other people.

I like the message that Charles Stanley of In Touch ministries has when he preaches on the radio or the television. He preaches directly from the Bible and he tells everyone not to believe him directly but to read the Bible and pray. He always says test everything yourself that I say. Read it yourself, pray about it. Ask God to give you enlightenment. God wants your heart and wants you to come to him and ultimately nobody else. Why? Because every human being and even a prophet can be swayed by Satan.

I agree that we shouldn't take everything at face value. If I had seen this guy preaching on a street corner, I probably would have completely disregarded him. There was just something in the moment that seemed like it was more than that. But that's the great thing about prayer. As Charles Stanley said, you can always go to the ultimate source of truth for confirmation. You don't just have to take someone else's word for it.
