Living Homes

This is a really cool housing-related development - Living Homes. The company designs environmentally-friendly houses that include materials, technologies and building processes which make a positive impact on air, soil, water and energy standards. The company has developed a model home in Santa Monica, California — a pre-fabricated 2,500 square foot modern home built with high-performance glass and insulation, LED lighting, low-flow faucets, solar energy, solar-radiant heat, natural ventilation, gray water irrigation and green roofs planted with organic gardens. They are also developing a community near Joshua Tree National Park. But, at some point, you should be able to get one of these homes anywhere in the country. I'd definitely be interested in one. The only trick is figuring out how to afford to buy some land in the Bay Area and get the house on that land.

I signed up for Living Homes' email mailing list. In the first email, it said:

"We are currently completing semi-custom LivingHomes for clients who have land and are interested in LivingHomes that meet their specific space requirements. Prices for these homes are approximately $250/square foot, not including design and engineering fees or foundation, transport and install costs, which are unique to specific sites. We'll introduce standard models that feature a variety of floorplans, finishes, sizes (1500-2500+ square feet) and price points. We'll be able to most cost effectively serve western states initially; we'll add other parts of the country over the next year. We completed our first LivingHome, in Santa Monica, and it is available for scheduled tours to people who are interested in a LivingHome within the next twelve months."

$250/square foot isn't particularly cheap - especially since it doesn't include land and other site/transportation costs. Perhaps my wife and I will be in a different position financially in 12-24 months.
